KOCHI: St Teresa’s College (STC), Ernakulam, has won the prestigious International Green Gown Awards 2023 endorsed by United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) under the category ‘Next Generation Learning and Skills’. The college was shortlisted from 93 finalists representing 25 countries.
The college has won the award for Teresian Karshakasree Challenge, an initiative to explore organic and eco-friendly approaches to farming for undergraduate students of the college. It is inspired from the massive open online course in organic farming by Mahatma Gandhi University. The primary goal of the initiative is to groom the youth as environmentally conscious and socially responsive citizens and motivate them to become green ambassadors in their respective localities by contributing to activities aimed at ecosystem restoration.
They were given a challenge every month like preparing compost, planting and maintaining their kitchen garden, preparing hydroponics, aquaponics, micro greens, etc.
‘The Giveaway Challenge’ encouraged students to share their produce and spread awareness through gifting. Videos illustrating methods for implementing the challenge were shared through Moodle, a learning platform. This challenge also enabled students to explore and develop non-academic and traditional skills. This is in consonance with the UNEP’s call for 2021-2030 to be recognized as the decade of ecosystem restoration.
The college has also introduced ‘A Herb at Home to Heal’ initiative to encourage students to grow and use medicinal plants that provide natural healing to all kinds of ailments.
Over the years, the college’s green club, Bhoomitrasena Club, has championed the cause of environmental protection by implementing sustainable practices on campus through water management, energy conservation, and greenery management.
